Artworks have been the subject of looting throughout history. However, Napoleon Bonaparte’s unprecedented looting at the end of 18th century has been transformative in unexpected ways in addition to the expected devastation it caused. We will follow the fascinating stories of some of the most admired artworks in Western Art, how they ended up where they are today, and the long-lasting consequences of Napoleon’s looting, from the idea of “public museums” to the practice of “restitution of looted art”.
